Socially Prescribed Perfectionism and Music Performance Anxiety in Music Education

Demidenko's Research explores the intersection of music education and music psychology, with a particular focus on the psychological well-being of young musicians.

This research explored the relationship between socially prescribed perfectionism and music performance anxiety within high-level music education. Drawing on contemporary research in psychology and music education, it examined the educational and social factors contributing to their development, their impact on students' psychological well-being, and evidence-informed approaches to their prevention and mitigation.

A Practical Toolkit for Early-Career Instrumental Teachers: Preventing Music Performance Anxiety

This research investigated how experienced instrumental teachers integrate strategies for preventing and reducing music performance anxiety into everyday one-to-one teaching practice. Based on a literature review and semi-structured interviews with experienced teachers, the project developed an evidence-informed practical toolkit designed to help early-career instrumental teachers support students' psychological well-being and confidence throughout the learning and performance process.

Future Research

Demidenko's research aims to translate psychological research into practical approaches that support both musical excellence and students' psychological well-being. His new project examines how strategies for mitigating socially prescribed perfectionism in adolescents are reflected in one-to-one instrumental teaching practice. The project aims to bridge research in psychology and music education to inform future evidence-informed teaching interventions.
